U.S. - India Educational Foundation Offers Grants for English Teachers in India

March 23, 2009

New Delhi -- The U.S. - India Educational Foundation (USIEF) is seeking applications from young Indians, currently teaching English at college level or training to be teachers of English, to spend a year in the United States teaching Bengali, Gujarati, Hindi or Urdu while strengthening their own English-language teaching skills.

Under the USIEF "Foreign Language Teaching Assistant Program," Indians aged 21 to 29 years entering the field of English teaching in this country are being recruited to teach one of  four Indian languages at U.S. colleges, universities and high schools for nine months while refining their skills and English language proficiency, and enhancing their knowledge of U.S. society and culture.

As part of its initiatives to strengthen India - U.S. educational cooperation, USIEF is currently offering these grants for the U.S. academic year that begins in August/September 2010.  In addition to serving as teaching assistants at U.S. educational institutions, the selected teachers will be able to take courses in English teaching and U.S. studies as non-degree students.  They will also facilitate cultural events and language clubs, and participate in community outreach projects to promote cross-cultural understanding between the United States and India.

The application deadline for this non-degree program is July 15, 2009. For more information, contact Ms. Sarina Paranjape or Dr. Gayatri Singhal at USIEF, "Fulbright House," 12 Hailey Road, New Delhi, 110001; email: ip@fulbright-india.org; visit the website www.usief.org.in; phone 011-42090909, or fax 011-2332-9718.
