Hyderabad—U.S. Chargé d’Affaires (Ambassador) Peter Burleigh visited Hyderabad  to meet with political, economic and educational leaders and to view the U.S. Consulate General for the first time, May 11 and 12, 2009.  Ambassador Burleigh met with Andhra Pradesh Governor Narayan Dutt Tiwari and Chief Secretary P. Ramakanth Reddy.  He also met with TDP leader and former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister, N. Chandrababu Naidu; Speaker of the AP State Assembly K.R. Suresh Reddy; and President of  Praja Rajyam Party K. Chiranjeevi.

At Osmania University, Ambassador Burleigh called on Vice Chancellor Prof. T. Tirupati Rao and visited Osmania University Center for International Programs (OUCIP), formerly the American Studies Research Center (ASRC).  Ambassador Burleigh re-affirmed the interest of the United States in promoting American Studies, including through cooperation with OUCIP.

Ambassador A. Peter Burleigh assumed his duties as Chargé d'Affaires of the U.S. Mission in India on April 6, 2009.  His interim appointment by Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton reflects the U.S. Government's emphasis on assuring highest-level representation and continuity in U.S. Indian relations.  Ambassador Burleigh's substantial diplomatic experience and many years in South Asia provides leadership of the U.S. Mission in India and continues to nurture the important bilateral relationship until a permanent Ambassador is named in the months ahead.
