U.S. provides $1.2 million for India's flood victims

February 12, 2008

NEW DELHI -- U. S. Charge d'Affaires, Steven J. White, announced today that the United States will provide an additional $1.2 million (Rs. 4.7 crores) for victims of last year's floods in Bihar. This support is in addition to the $1.05 million (Rs. 4.1 crores) the United States provided in September 2007.

The funds will be used to help flood victims in four flood-affected Districts of Bihar rebuild their livelihoods through agriculture and economic reconstruction efforts.  The funds will also provide support for water and sanitation work, disaster preparedness training, and malaria control.  967 people perished in Bihar and 24.6 million people from the state were affected by the floods in 2007.

The U.S. Agency for International Development will partner with non-governmental organizations Agency for Technical Cooperation and Development (ACTED), Project Concern International and Catholic Relief Services to implement the flood emergency recovery activities.
