Immigrant Visas:

Q. 1. What is the priority date running for this month?

Answer: Because this information changes frequently, please call (033) 2282-3611 and ask for the visa section between 2:00 to 4:00 PM.

Q. 2. Can an immigrant visa applicant apply for and process his/her visa here?

Answer: No, immigrant visa applicants from our consular district (i.e. West Bengal, Orissa, Bihar, Jharkand, the North Eastern States and Andamans) are processed by our American Consulate General in Mumbai since July 1992. The American Consulate General, Kolkata only processed immigrant visa applications for adoption cases.

Q. 3. Can the immigrant visa applicant do his/her immigrant medical tests in Kolkata instead of Mumbai?

Answer: Yes, immigrant visa applicants can do their medical tests in Kolkata.
The list of the panel of doctor's provided here is also provided by Mumbai Consulate.

Q. 4. What is the status of my or my relative’s immigrant visa case?

Answer: Please contact the American Consulate General, Mumbai to learn the status of your case. If you have sent a letter to the American Consulate General, Kolkata inquiring as to status, your letter would have been forwarded to the American Consulate General, Mumbai for their action.

Q. 5. What are the current immigrant visa fees?

Q. 6. What documents should an immigrant visa applicant or their relatives carry with them for visa interview?

Orphan Immigrant Visas

Q. 1. How will I know if the American Consulate General, Kolkata has received the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service (USINS) approval for the orphan? What should I do if it has not been received? Parents or local adoption agencies and the U.S. adoption agencies want's to know if we have received the approval for the Orphan child who will be adopted by American Citizen ?

Answer: Once we receive notice of approval from the USINS, we immediately send a letter to the adopting parents and a letter to the local adoption agency to notify them. If you have not received a letter from us, then we advise you to contact the USINS office where you have filed the I-600, and to request USINS to fax the approval to us.

Q. 2. If we have received the approval, when will the immigrant visa be issued to the orphan?

Answer: Once we inform the local adoption agency about the receipt of the approval from USINS, it is then up to them to request the interview appointment. Please contact the local adoption agency, where the orphan child is staying.

Q 3. Can the Consulate help to get an Indian passport for the orphan ?

Answer: No, to obtain an Indian passport, the adoption agency or the adopting parents will have to contact the Passport office directly.

Q. 4. The local USINS office is not accepting certain Indian local court orders and documents submitted with the Form I-600 application. Can the Consulate send a letter to the USINS office in the U.S. ?

Answer: If we receive a letter from the USINS or the adoption agency requesting to write letter addressing specific questions, we will write to the USINS to offer clarification on documents.

Q. 5. Will the Consulate process an Orphan Immigrant Visa based upon a Form I-171H (Form I-600A - Approval for Advance Processing of Orphan Immigrant visa)?

Answer: No, we will process the visa application only after receiving an approval of the filed Form I-600.

Q. 6. Will the Consulate process an Orphan Immigrant Visa based upon a Form I-171 (Form I-600 approved) that is sent by the U.S. adopting parents, U.S. adoption agency or the local adoption agency ?

Answer: No, we will only process the immigrant visa if we receive the approval notice directly from the USINS.

FIANCE(E) VISAS

Q. 1. Has the Consulate received the fiance(e) visa petition, and when can my fiance(e) get his/her visa processed?

Answer: We do not process fiance(e) visa petitions at the American Consulate General, Kolkata. If we receive the approval, we forward it to the American Consulate in Mumbai for visa processing. Further information regarding when the application will be processed would have to come from them.

Q. 2. Why does the American Consulate in Kolkata not process fiance(e) visas, when the applicants are from our consular district?

Answer: All processing of fiance(e) visa applicants from our Consular District (i.e. West Bengal, Orissa, Bihar, Jharkand, the North Eastern States and Andamans) has been handled by our American Consulate General in Mumbai since July 1992.

Q. 3. If the American Consulate in Kolkata is not processing the fiance(e) visas, why are the USINS offices still forwarding the petitions to Kolkata?

Answer: Sometimes files get accidentally routed to the Kolkata Consulate. Please contact the USINS office if your case has been mis routed. Also, please request that your case be sent to Mumbai while filing the petition.

Q. 4. What documents should we bring to the interview?

Answer: Please contact the American Consulate General, Mumbai for documents requirements.
